Loss resides within the landscape of life. Loss is that part of the lifecycle through which we each recognize our mortality while simultaneously acknowledging that a person who was in the center of our lives is no longer present in our day-to-day world. One of the most difficult things that I have experienced is having clarity on how to respond when a close friend or family member experiences a loss of a spouse, family member or dear friend. Across the decades I have learned that my words seldom seem sufficient. If my words ring hollow to my ears, how can they possibly provide sustenance or comfort to the person who is overcome by the loss.
I have come to a point in life where I believe that the best response lies in the recognition that no words can fill the space in a heart that is now harboring a vast empty space. The act of being present is, on many levels, sufficient to lessen the depth of the abyss of grief.

When no words seem to be sufficient, quiet caring presence is priceless…
